Do metal roofs attract lightning? No. Lightning goes for whatever is tallest or offers the easiest path to the ground during a storm. A metal roof won’t pull a bolt out of a clear sky.
Metal does conduct electricity, and that’s where the myth comes from. If lightning hits a building with a metal roof, the panels can actually help spread the energy out, provided the building has a proper grounding path. Designing that path is a job for a qualified electrical professional. None of that means metal invites strikes. Trees, towers, and how high the building sits still matter far more.
Some Florida owners worry that switching to metal will raise their storm risk. During hurricane season, the bigger roofing concerns are wind uplift, fastener design, and flashing details. If a building needs lightning protection, that’s an electrical system question, and it’s not a good reason to rule out metal panels.
After a strike or a major storm, check for damaged equipment and stressed roof openings. Don’t assume the panels failed until someone has walked the roof.
Keep insurance and safety conversations grounded in facts. So, do metal roofs attract lightning? Not more than other roofs. Strike risk depends on exposure and grounding for the whole structure. When choosing a roof for Tampa Bay weather, wind attachment, water shedding, and flashings you can maintain should still come first. That’s the real answer whenever someone asks do metal roofs attract lightning.
